To anyone going to Hong Kong soon, 22 SHIPS is one dining experience you should not miss!  This no reservations, no service charge restaurant by Chef Jason Atherton is one treasure of a place.  It is located at street level, 22 Ship Street, Wan Chai, on a road that accommodates a slew of restaurants.  As tiny, dark and crowded as it is, 22 SHIPS really stands out for its look and menu.  A tapas bar that serves creative “small plates” so for a big group, you may have to order more than one plate for everyone to have a taste.  It was a double birthday celebration for two lovely ladies in our group and it was the perfect ending to our short but sweet trip.

This place is a favourite of businessmen and Hong Kong’s working crowd to hold lunch or dinner meetings.  They start to pour in at 1pm for lunch so try to come in early to avoid waiting in line.  Dinner lines they say, vary.  Queuing is not a hassle though since there are little coffee shops and places to visit in this busy street while you await your seating.

we had these roasted padron peppers with garlic and sea salt to start. good, interesting, but not the highlight of my meal

slow cooked egg, morcilla (crisped blood sausage), mash. i wanted to drink the sauce too. yup, that good

for those who like their marrow rich and meaty, this is for you. a little too rich for me, but nonetheless, good. baked with gentleman’s relish and onion jam.

i want to try making this at home. red snapper, pine nuts, chorizo, pepper. what more can i say?

seafood paella, fava beans, crispy bacon. mix this all up because the burst of flavour comes from underneath this lovely rice dish

i saved the best for last. definitely the highlight of my meal. suckling pig, pineapple, piquillo peppers and pink peppercorn

our cold sweet treat. goats cheese ice cream, granola, raspberry. chewy honey crunch morsels make a delicious ending

 

This sums up our bittersweet, trip-end meal.  I could’ve sat here all afternoon.  I hope you make your way…
